The Rotary Club of Mason/Deerfield recently awarded four scholarships to seniors at Kings and Mason High Schools. Scholarship applicants from both schools submitted applications and essays and were interviewed individually by a committee of Rotarians.
The Arthur R. and Hazel Johnsen Memorial Scholarships are awarded yearly to Mason and Kings seniors or area residents attending Great Oaks Career Centers or the Warren County Career Center.
In establishing the scholarship, Mr. Johnsen recognized that all teenagers have the potential to excel and he wished to reward those who demonstrated an enthusiasm for academic or vocational studies. In addition to academic and scholastic excellence, consideration is also given to students who demonstrate the desire to be their best in the areas of moral character, the promise of leadership, and a demonstration of Rotary International’s motto of “Service Above Self.”
The 2014 recipients from Kings High School are Lora Vonderhaar who received a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for 4 years, and Alyssa King who received a $1,000 scholarship.
The scholarship winners from Mason are Shivani Ambani who received $1000 renewable for 4 years and Vineet Erasala who received $1,000.
